Storing Live Lobsters

Lobsters can live about 24-36 hours out of water. They need to be refrigerated until they are cooked.

How to Boil Live Lobster

Place the live lobster in a kettle containing about 3 inches of briskly boiling salted water. Cover immediately. From the time the water boils again allow 18-20 minutes. Serve lobster either hot or cold with a side of melted butter.

How To Steam Live Lobsters

Steam the lobsters by bringing 2-4 inches of lightly salted water to a rapid boil in a large pot. Place the lobsters in the water and cook them according to the following chart:

Lobster Size To Fully Cook
1 to 1-1/8 lb. 10-14 minutes
1-1/4 lb. 14-18 minutes
1-1/2 lb.  18-21 minutes
2 to 2-1/2 lb. 21-25 minutes

After Cooking

Once lobsters are cooked, they will not spoil for one to two days as long as they are kept cold. Please eat them within that time. If your lobster smells of ammonia it is not edible.

Lobster is very high in amino acids which are the building blocks of protein. They are high in potassium and magnesium, vitamins A, B12, B6, B3, and B2, calcium, zinc, and iron. Lobsters also contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to decrease the risk of heart disease.
